The Battle of the Christmas Trees

We all have our Christmas traditions. Each one varies from everyone else's. I have found when you get married you each keep some and you compromise on some. One of my husband's family traditions was to have a real Christmas tree every year, and cut it down from a tree farm. Not only that, but he always grew up with a Christmas tree that "matched".
I grew up with a fake tree every year, and it was decorated with miscellaneous ornaments that my sister and I acquired over the years as a child. When we got married, we pretty much took over my husband's tradition the first year. This year, however, we did one of each! And of course, each of us thinks our own tree is best.

This one was obviously the pretty matching tree. I do really love this tree, its cozy looking, I love the tree topper, and the colors look so festive! Plus, it doesn't take much to decorate, because everything matches so well!

Eclectic Christmas Tree

Ornament Collecting

We went with a smaller tree for the "fun" tree, since there aren't as many ornaments, and our dining room isn't huge. But I wanted a place to display my ornaments - I always get one from a series that I've been collecting for over 10 years. And I really like my movie themed movies, such as my I Love Lucy ones.

The pom pom garland is just perfect for this tree, and I love all the colors that aren't so traditional. The tree topper is a bit gaudy, but just like one my grandma had as a kid, and somehow suits the tree perfectly! And to top it all off, I have loved collecting the ornaments all these years.

So what's your holiday tradition? Does your family tend to go with a "matchy" tree or a "fun" tree?

  1. What a fun tradition that you and your husband have started! Our family room tree is our "fun" tree - colored lights and all the ornaments my husband and I have received over the year. Now that we are moving into a house, I plan to get another tree with white lights (we always have fake trees) that's a matchy tree. I also have two smaller trees that hold miniature Hallmark ornaments that I've received every year since I was a baby. They only make ornaments like that from the Peanuts collection now, and I have every single one!

  2. Love that you guys have two trees! That's what we did growing up, except we always called the fun tree the kids tree. Now that I only have room for one tree I do a matchy tree, that was really always my favorite one growing up! The first few years on my own I got real trees, but the last few years I've done a fake tree, purely for convenience. But the real tree is coming back some time!

  4. I have always had a fake tree and mismatched family ornaments, but always wanted a real tree. Now that I have my own home I can't have a real tree, because my kids are allergic! Wah! But, the fake trees look so real these days, not like the one my mom had. It is too funny that you posted that burlap ruffle tree skirt tutorial, because I was just at HobLobs last week buying the supplies to make one. I'll have to look at your tutorial... there are a ton on Pinterest. I may need to go out and buy more glue gun sticks prior to starting, tho! LOL! I think next year I want to buy an all gold tree from Hobby Lobby, they had one I saw in the store and it is maybe 4' and skinny. I would love to put that in our family room w/ the tv, since our living room has the Christmas tree in it by the tv. And, of course it'll be matchymatchy! Love your trees!

  9. I'm a mixture of you and your husbands traditions... we always get a real tree (I love the way it smells) but our ornaments are a collection of memories acquired throughout the years. Both of your trees are beautiful and unique in their own way!

  10. I've always done a "hodge-podge" tree with all sorts of ornaments with my family for as long as I can remember. When I moved out of my parents house I took several with me, and have collected some of my own, none of which follow a theme. However when my BF and I got our first tree together my ornaments were not nearly enough to cover that 9' giant, so I let him get "matchy" balls and snowflakes to mix in. I like the combination because my ornaments are still there, but it does look a little more cohesive with all the similar colored balls and snowflakes! We still haven't gotten a tree yet this year and I am DYING to finally get it up. I'm jealous you have two!

  11. I like the idea of a fun tree better! That's what we always did. Don't get me wrong, matchy trees can be gorgeous - but they're just not as fun!

  13. I am so excited about being able to decorate our tree together this year! Love your tree girl! My mother once we all moved out switched over to her beautiful Martha Stewart tree and all of us didn't make the cut hahahahaha

  14. Gorgeous trees! I have a fake one I use every year so I don't get that nice tree smell. Also we've never done a fun tree!

  15. I feel like I could have wrote this post myself because we're going through the same thing trying to decide between real vs artificial! I love how both of your trees turned out-- getting two definitely makes for an easier decision :)
