5 on Friday - 5 tips to applying the perfect self tanner!

Who hates jean shopping? This girl! Is anyone else with me?! It's so hard to find the perfect fit, the right price, the right color - the choices are endless but seem like you can't find any that work. I wouldn't have even had to jean shop yesterday, except that my favorite skinny jeans ripped right down the leg yesterday. I guess I should have seen it coming, I've had them for more than 5 years. But my favorite pair?!? So I had no choice.
As stupid as I felt, I walked into American Eagle. Call me a kid, but their jeans fit me just right. So I went on the hunt. Side note - either I'm getting older or kids are getting ruder. The customers were so rude to the staff, and the staff was not friendly at all. Which is something I have come to value as I grow older. But I ended up finding a pair on sale for $30 that fits so well and I love the color! Yay for more skinny jeans!
Last week, I wrote a post about the self tanners that I use, and I was so glad to hear about which ones you all loved to use too! I had a few people ask me about tips and tricks to the process, so I decided to do my 5 on Friday post on tips about my self tanner.
The past few weeks, I have exclusively been using the Fake Bake 60 min tan spray. For my tips, I will mainly focus on use with this tan and other spray/wipe on tans. I am so happy with this brand that I intend to use it for a long time to come, and it's pretty user friendly. It comes with the spray, gloves (not pictured), and a tan mitt.

Tip #1 - Use the gloves provided (not pictured). I didn't use them the first time I applied this, and I did use it the second time. It made my hand color look way more natural. You don't spray any tan spray on the back of the glove, but somehow not wearing the gloves made the back of my hands look too dark. You wear the gloves under the tan mitt, and use the colored soft side of the mitt to apply in a circular motion.
Tip #2 - While we're talking about hands, that is the trickiest part in my opinion. When I rub the tan lotion on on my hands, I put my hand in the "claw" shape. You want your joints (elbows, knees, knuckles) bent when you apply tan spray so it gets in all the grooves. Make sure you get in between your fingers where the arrow is pointing. That is the spot I typically tend to forget. I don't put any (or try not to) on my nail beds.
Tip # 3 - I applied mine on a beach towel. There isn't a ton of spray off from the nozzle, but there is some. One thing I love about this particular brand is that it soaks on fast and quick and doesn't leave that tan lotion feeling. I still recommend wearing a tshirt and shorts while waiting your hour, because sometimes long pants can leave slight crease marks (found that out by experience). Apply the tan spray by spraying it onto the mitt and then rubbing in a circular motion. This is a before picture.
Tip #4 - I rubbed 2 coats on my legs, arms, and face. Just because this skin sees more "use" like shaving, face washing frequently, etc. I apply one coat, let it dry while I do the middle of my body, and then do the second coat. It will look super dark when you apply it, because it has a color guide in it so you can see where it went and if it's even. Don't worry, it won't stay that dark. You can leave it on for 1 hour for a slight tan, 2 hours for a medium tan, and 3 hours for a bronze tan. After the time is up you shower it off! I typically leave mine on for 2 hours. Mostly because I am impatient. This is an after photo.
Tip #5 - Yay! You're done! (Before and After above). I am sure you all know, but the trick to keeping the tan is to moisturize a ton. I usually try to lotion up twice a day. You may be able to get by with once a day, but with my eczema, I can't swing that. You still can use this if you have eczema - when you have the original coat on and you haven't showered yet, it will look really patchy. But don't worry, it's just the color guard. It will wash off and your color will still look smooth.
Keep in mind, this color will get darker over time! When you wash it off, you may not think you look that tan. Just give it several hours and it will look great. I put mine on before I go to bed, shower it off, slather on the lotion and then go to bed. Then I wake up with an awesome tan!
Have a happy weekend lovelies!

  3. Wow your tan looks awesome! I've got to try this stuff. It seems so similar to a spray tan but cheaper and easier. How many days it normally last you?

    1. It lasts so long! The color stays on for about a week and gradually fades. And each application uses so little of the bottle. I think I'll get at least 10 tans out of it! 2.5 months for $20 isn't bad at all :)

  6. I'm with you on the jean shopping! Not the thing I enjoy most, that's for sure. I feel like I've been in pants more often than not for the last 4 months, and I am so ready for consistent warm weather where the dresses and skirts (without tights) can come out again! xo

  10. Thank you for explaining your process! So how often do you do the fake bake self-tanner? You may have said before but I don't remember. I normally shower each morning so I may have to change up my schedule some if I do this. Any certain regular lotions you recommend that work well with this self-tanner?

    1. With this particular brand it lasted me 6 or 7 days before I needed to do the process again. It gradually fades. I use any type of lotion - bath and body works is my fav right now!
