To barre or not to barre

One of my New Years goals was to be actively more health conscious, and to find a workout routine that works for me. The weather has been so cold here, that running outside for the moment is out. I don't particularly enjoy running when the weather is nice, let alone when the wind chill is below zero.
Does anyone else hate going to the gym? Not, "I hate going to the gym to work out". I hate the actual getting ready and driving to and from the gym. I feel like I have to get ready and look presentable to go to the gym to workout when I am just going to get sweaty and gross. Plus, it wastes time out of my day. Maybe it's just me.
For the last few months, I have been wanting to try barre classes. I have read great things online, and it seems something I think I would actually enjoy. So I looked into it. Unfortunately the only place they offer these, is 40 min from my house. And I just don't know that driving over an hour for each class is justifiable. I am hoping that this will become more popular and maybe migrate down to my side of the city. Until then, I have been contemplating using the Pure Barre at home videos.
The reviews online for this are all pretty great. But I also know, that even the best video doesn't take the place of a real time class. It just isn't quite the same. There is noone to correct your technique as you do it, you can't ask questions, etc. So this is my dilemma.
Has anyone else out there tried these classes or these videos at? Or have an opinion about how well this would work?
I spent my Tuesday off cleaning, doing laundry, and entertaining the pup. Nothing too exciting for this girl, and my outfit of the day consisted of sweats and a long sleeve tee. How glamorous.
I looked up at one point to see Ollie doing this little pose. Creeper much?
Have a happy Wednesday ladies, and send me your thoughts!

  1. You know how I feel about this post ;-) A lot of the girls at work tried the classes but it wasn't feasible because of their kiddos/work etc. They got the videos and loved them!!!! She goes over your form and cues you reminders throughout the exercises. I've heard great things about them! You can always ask me for questions too ;-) xoxooxoxoxo

  2. I do Pure Barre whenever I'm on the road. It's a little costly, but so is the kit to do it all at home. We usually do lots of work with the actual bar, which makes me wonder how one would do that at home. If you're thinking of home workouts, I would lean more towards pilates or maybe kettle ball workouts - pilates does a lot of work with your body weight and kettleballs are fairly cheap and easy to store. But, PB would be a great treat once a week or so!

    1. I know a lot of people at home use a high backed chair but that would not be the same. I have a kettle bell too, maybe I will look into doing both!

  4. I'm so jealous that you've found a barre class. I've been looking high and low for one close to where I am but not found anything - it's something I've wanted to do for years :o) Xx

  5. You will not regret trying pure barre!! Each location should offer a new client special of an unlimited month (which can be started on any day not just the first of the month) for $100!! It sounds a little steep, but when each class is $23-25 you make your money back quickly!! I have tried both the classes and videos and can honestly tell you that you get the same burn you would in the class...yes having the teacher there is helpful, but when it's free it's just as good!

  8. I'm 100% with you, the gym isn't the worst part, it's that whole getting there thing! I want to try a barre class sooo bad, but I won't do it by myself and haven't been able to find anyone to do it with me yet! Let us know if you try out the videos & end up liking them!

I've heard great things about Barre! I saw a groupon for a great deal in my area but it was still too far away to make any difference when it comes to price. :/

  12. I LOVED taking classes in college. They offered so many at various times. I went all the time and now that I'm out of school I never want to go to the gym (it just isn't the same!) I tried tapes for a little and the only positive about them is that when you are to lazy to drive yourself to the gym that leaves you less of an excuse to go into the livingroom and put the tape in. I noticed that I didn't work out as hard in the comfort of my home though then I would in a class in front of other people!

  13. I totally hate going to gym too! It's such a time suck, and it's not a a particularly pleasant place to be. I find I enjoy small fitness studios much more!

  14. I typically just run a lot. That way, everything's on my own schedule. I do love going to classes and such, but yeah... #time #life haha

  15. I'm in the same boat about Pure Barre- when the time it takes to drive to and from class is longer than the class itself, it's probably not a good investment (if I'm paying $100 a month, I need to go, like, every day)! So glad you're asking for people's feedback- let us know if you end up trying it!!!

  17. OK, so I really wanted to go to Purre Barre classes, but they are super expensive. I already go to yoga classes and I refuse to give those up. I did get the DVD a couple of years ago, and I did it once. I am just not a DVD work out kind of girl. I like to go to classes because it keeps me more motivated. Also, my dogs like to attack me when I work out at home - like lay in the middle of my yoga mat, or jump on me and knock me down... it just isn't worth it. I should try the DVDs again, but again, my boys don't like me to do it. I have a friend that goes to the classes and she likes them, they are just so much!! Let me know what you decide!

  18. There are at least three gyms within a 5 minute walk from my office and two gyms within a 5-10 minute walk of my house, so I have no excuse to not go. I think if I had to get in a car and drive there, I'd be put off by it too!

  19. I'm all for home videos because I hate leaving my house (especially in the winter to go to the gym). A group of my friends and I are going to take a yoga class starting in Feb, I think it will be easier to leave the house when you have someone to go with.

  20. Ugh, it's seriously the worst when the class you want to to take is not offered near you. I LOVED hot yoga but when I moved the studio became 40 minutes away! I was not going to drive that. Hoping somewhere near me starts offering htem soon!!

  21. I'm totally with you on not liking the gym! It takes SO much time to get ready and go, which is a complete waste, since you have to shower again after. I started doing yoga classes recently, and I'm liking them so far. I'm not sure how much it actually counts as exercise, but I like to pretend it's legitimate. Also, cute puppy pic :-)

  22. Totally feel you on not going outside to run - the polar vortex has been BRUTAL. I used to hate going to the gym too but my current apartment building has a gym downstairs so that's been easier for me. Lately though I've just been getting up 20 minutes earlier and starting my day off with a yoga session. It's definitely helped - I feel like my health and posture has improved a lot!
