Sick Day and The Golden Rule

It seems like I've caught the same bug that several of you have caught. I was out for the count today with a terrible sore throat. I mostly spent my time sleeping, popping cold and flu pills, and watching I Love Lucy reruns. I also caught up on the blogging world. A certain someone was my sick buddy. He was a blanket hog too.
Some of my "sick staples" include several glasses of OJ, my electric blanket, soup, and my puppy dog.
While I was catching up on blogs, news, etc., I came across this article. An article about a fit mom that has gone viral. You can find similar versions of this one from Yahoo and other sources as well. In a nutshell, this mother posted the picture below on her site about her weight loss and body transformation with the title "What's your excuse?" and has created quite the stir.

In all honesty, I really am shocked at how mean and rude some of the comments on her page have been. Didn't we all learn the golden rule in kindergarten? If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. Several people are telling her that to look this good she either neglects her children, it came easy to her because of her ethnicity, or she doesn't have a real job. I completely disagree. After reading her story on her page, she has worked hard for what she accomplished and simply wants to inspire and help others to do so as well. I say to the people who disagree with her views, stop reading her article; you are not being forced to read it. If you don't like her philosophy, then move on and don't comment.
I think her motto "What's your excuse?" is dead on. As a registered nurse on an intensive care unit, it is more than evident that America's rate of over weight population and obesity is ever increasing - leading to a multitude of health problems. It's a continuous cycle. The woman is merely trying to inspire others with her story, and I think with a good cause. I'm sure she had no idea that this many people would read it. (12,000 comments and counting?!). Thank goodness it appears that over half of them are positive.
Everyone's heath story will be different. We each have our own obstacles and excuses - if you want to call it that - to becoming a more healthier us. She's not saying it would be easy, she's showing the world that she accomplished it. If you want to read her full story or follow her posts, you can find it at http://www.mariakang.com/.

I don't know about you, but this has inspired me to go out and kick some butt when it comes to my workouts! Because really, I have no good excuse not to. What about you?

  2. So sorry to hear you are feeling sick! I feel like it's almost inevitable around this time of the year! I heard about that story a few weeks back, they actually did a story on our local news-- I haven't read any of the comments or looked at her page but I don't doubt the ridiculous comments. It always baffles me how social media seems to give so many people a platform to be negative and nasty! And honestly the lady is a fitness blogger and that's her business-- of course she's going to be super fit! As with everything on the internet, you have to leave it as one person's opinion-- take it or leave it-- and if you leave it, you don't need to leave hateful comments!

  3. First, so sorry you dont feel good. Everyone has been sick around here lately! 2nd, If this were a commercial or ad backed by some weight loss supplement no one would complain or say a word. Its the people who go out on their own to try and inspire others that take a beating. I guess the insecure bullies out there feel better knowing the girl doesnt have anyone backing her up and how dare her go try to inspire others all by herself. What that picture does for me, is make me want to go be a better everything; mom, wife, jeweler, blogger...and especially makes me want to go the gym!

  4. This is a pretty good summary for why some people are annoyed with that woman. I mean, I'm not annoyed, because I just don't care, honestly, but I think the article brings up some good points in general. The comments are also both enlightening and entertaining! All that aside, I hope you feel better! I'm trying to stave off my 2nd cold this Fall and it is no fun!

  5. I saw that picture circulating as well and I agreed but disagreed. I don't have children but I work full-time and I'm pretty busy just running errands and enjoying life after work. I don't have as much time to go work out as I'd like BUT I don't think that's an excuse to not consciously make better food choices. The problem is that people gorge on crappy food and don't get any sort of physical activity. There is no excuse to not go for a half hour walk a day and eat better. In my opinion anyway. :p

    I hope you feel better!

  7. Hope you feel better soon! I was not in the loop with this fitness women and I'm glad you shared this story. My boyfriend and I have VERY busy lives and have recently decided that we need to get healthy. This means waking up very early before work or making time at night (instead of sitting on the couch watching TV) to exercise. It is very possible for her to work a real job and have kids and still lose the weight. It is important to her so she makes time. What people aren't mentioning is that she is setting a wonderful example for her children who will probably grow up around a healthy lifestyle. I wish I had parents who cared more about being healthy earlier on in my life. The golden rule is funny, because it is something we learned in elementary school, but it holds true for your entire life!

  9. First feel better! Second, I don't like that mom, but only because I am super jealous lol. I don't even have kids and I don't look like her. You are right, good for her and the positive example she sets. People are just mean because they have excuses, not her drive and determination.

  11. That is so weird that people were so hateful (and not mention racist) to her! I think people just try to make themselves feel better about themselves by putting others down. I do not have abs that look ANYTHING like hers, but I don't have an excuse. I am just plain lazy and not motivated to work out. Anyway, I think it's great inspiration!

I'm sorry you are feeling badly... I hope you feel better soon!

  12. I agree %100 I am tired of the average (not obese) over weight person thinking they are some kind of victim or unlucky in life b/c they are not stick thin and while living on Mcky D's, sugar and refined foods. To these people I say Wait, you born in the west to affluence and plenty of food, no one ever abused you or mistreated you, you do not have a painful debilitating disease, you have the luxury of always having plenty. But somehow you are a victim because you can't hire someone to do the exercising for you and you refuse to choose to change your behavior but still claim to be victim. You are not a victim. Just lazy and have mastered the art of procrastination.

These people are haters b/c they know deep down that could change if they wanted to but chose not to and would rather claim to be a victim and she proves that they are not victims.

I agree with you! I was shocked to see that she got so many negative comments. I think it's just that people who are unhappy with themselves are trying to make themselves feel better by putting others down and by saying negative things. I totally agree with you on the saying "If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all". Why can't they just keep their thoughts to themselves.

And that is so sweet that you have your dog as your little bed buddy, my dachshund (aka the sausage dog) is just the same, every time I get sick, she is my little sidekick! :)

And I definitely agree to that saying- if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all! People should be reminded about that! :/

  15. What a cute buddy to have with you while you're sick! I wish my lab would sit still for more than 5 minutes to cuddle!!

As far as the article you posted about. I hope this makes that woman even stronger. Those that are writing hateful things are probably people who ARE full of excuses. She made her health a priority so that she can take care of her kids and be around for them for a long time. Too many women walk around with "baby weight" when their kids are in college. Looking like she does is HARD, for someone who is a mom or who isn't. Good for her, for her dedication and inspiration. I hope if I ever have three kids that I can be half that healthy!

  24. Awww being sick is never fun, but at least if you're going to be under the weather, you might as well relax and enjoy the quiet time.

With regards to work outs....we can all find excuses if we want to find excuses. I love reading inspiring articles and even seeing inspiring Instagram accounts to help keep me from making these types of excuses.

  26. I hate internet criticism. Everyone needs to promote what they love rather than bash on what they hate. It all boils down to jealousy, I think. Unfortunately, I've had to delete a few people on Facebook because it seems like no matter what I would share, they always found some negative words to add to it.

I think life is all about priorities. People want a nice, clean house, an amazing career and a perfect body but they don't understand that those things take time, work and priority. I get up a lot earlier than I need to just because I want to have a half hour to clean and an hour to work out before my shower and day begins. A clean house and being healthy are very important to me.
