Fa La La La La Mantle DIY!

You guessed it - I have begun to make my Christmas DIY's. I don't have any Christmas decorations up yet, it's still a bit early. But I want to have my DIY projects done before the holiday season starts! This is my first one!
Christmas Mantle Decor
Ignore that the pumpkins are there - I just hung up these new Christmas decorations for effect. This DIY is easy, and you can make it any color you want! We're doing a red and gold theme this year, so I chose those colors.

You'll need:
-5 cross stitch hoops in 2 sizes
-glitter
-modge podge
-stencils
-1 yd material of your color
-glittery ribbon
-hot glue gun
-paint

Start by painting the hoops the color you want. Mine are white. I did two coats, and then let them dry. After they are dry you will put them on the fabric like this:

Then you can cut them apart. Leave the extra material hanging from it for the time being. You will then stencil on the letters with the modge podge. Make sure that the screw of the hoops is at the top when you are putting on the glue. I used a foam brush. My screw is not at the top on the picture below, so I had to adjust is later. Hence leaving the extra fabric hanging out the back.
Glitter Christmas Decor
Then, sprinkle on the glitter and shake off the excess.

If any of your letters are not centered or are crooked, you can move it around as long as you have left the extra fabric on the back up to this point. As long as you are careful, you can now cut off the excess of fabric hanging off - you don't need to wait for the glue and glitter to dry.
You will then thread the glittery ribbon through the hole under the screw. Cut the ribbon into different lengths to create the shabby chic look - you don't want the hoops all hanging at the same height.
Christmas DIY
I had extra ribbon, so I tied bows and glued them in front of the screws. This step is not necessary, it would look good without them. I just wanted to used the rest of my ribbon.
Now they are ready to hang on your mantle! I think this project would look great with green fabric as well! The possibilities are endless! I want to see pictures if any of you try this!

What are your favorite Christmas decorations?

    1. It's talking restraint to leave the fall decorations up and not put the Christmas ones up!

  11. This is the cutest thing ever! I had a DIY disaster this week-- aka glitter EVERYWHERE haha, do you use a spray or does the mod podge work in keeping the glitter from falling everywhere?

We don't have a mantle but I definitely want to try this or something similar for somewhere else in our house!

    1. Haha I love glitter, but it is a huge mess. The glitter spray from hobby lobby is actually pretty mess free, but it takes a few coats. When I use regular glitter I try to contain it as best i can with newspaper, but it inevitably gets on the carpet, my clothes and the dog :)
      Good luck with the glitter!!

  21. This is too cute!! You are so good at the DIYs!! I tend to start projects and never finish them. Last year I did good getting a few decorations up for Christmas. But in my defense, my Christmas decorations are in our attic above the garage, and my husband is in law school and was "too busy" studying to get it all down, and I was sure I would break my neck if I tried to get them. So we had a half decorated Christmas tree with no tree skirt, one or two things out and that is about it. But my grandmother and I did make stockings!
