Shellac Nail Manicure at Home

I mentioned in my previous post about nail polish, that I don't really paint my nails with regular nail polish anymore. I work in a hospital, and the constant hand sanitizer and hand washing leaves it gooey and it comes off after an hour. I got so tired of putting it on and off. I had several blog comments asking me about these at home gel manicures. So here you go ladies!
My husband's mother used to be a beautician, and she discovered the CND UV Lamp for at home gel manicures. She got one first, and after I tried it out I just had to have one. So my sister and I went in together and bought one, and neither of us have looked back since. I highly recommend it, especially if you get gel manicures often. After paying a nail salon for four gel manicures, this machine would have already paid for itself. I love the shiny look of the polish! I wish this was a better picture of my nails, but I took to show off my new wedding ring at the time. The color on my nails is a dark dark grey.

A few things:
-The initial "start up cost" will not be cheap, but like I said, if you are one who pays for manicures all the time, then this will be cheaper in the long run. This would make a great Christmas present!
-It does take a few practice rounds, and I can offer you some tips. I have had my machine for almost 2 years now.
-There is no dry time. Once they are painted they are dry. Yay!
-You need acetone to take it off, but it comes off so easy. Mine usually peels right off in a sheet without the use of acetone.
-My polish usually lasts about 2 weeks on. All the hand washing won't let it stay on any longer than that. My mother in law's job does not require so much hand cleansing, and hers will last even longer!
-After I have my color on for two weeks, and I take it off, I let my nails "rest" for a few days. If you do this too many times in succession, it can tear up the top layer of your nail. As long as I wait a few days before the next coat, this doesn't happen.

You can buy this machine from several places, including beauty supply stores. I got mine at amazon.com. You can google "CND UV lamp" and it will come up. It looks like this.
I'm sure you have guessed by now, but you can't just use regular polish. You will need CND's top and base coat, and then colors of your choice. They look like this:
I won't go into a lot of detail about the application process in this post. If you wish to know more details, then just let me know and I would be happy to get them to you!
The machine has a "time bar" as I call it on the top of the machine. After each coat, you need to put your hand in the lamp. Your pattern will go as follows: base coat, lamp, color coat, lamp, color coat, lamp, top coat, lamp. Say that three times fast. Each time you put your hand in the lamp, it is for a little bit longer time period.
After applying these coats and completing the last lamp time, you swipe each nail with alcohol. This is what sets it. And then you are done!

I know this may sound like a lot of steps, but after you do it a few times you get the hang of it. It only takes me about 20 minutes to do all of my nails. For only having to do it once every two weeks, I think that's great!

This is how I get my gel manicures at home! Good luck if you try it, and if you need any more application tips or more detailed instructions let me know!

What are your nail secrets?

  3. I have one of these machines as well, I love it! The hardest part for me is "capping" the tips of my nails to seal them, I always end up with the polish all over my skin!

  15. This sounds amazing to have at home!!! I love gel manicures but my last one totally ruined my nails. I had to let them grow out, it was so annoying! Luckily for me, I can keep my regular nail polish on for about 1 week before it gets too bad but it would sure be nice to not have to sit around and let them dry!

  16. I've never tried shellac, but this sounds awesome! Especially that your polish lasts two weeks.
I've recently started using Revlon Multi Care Base + Top Coat and my regular polish has been lasting an entire week! I've never had that kind of success before, so I'm really loving it.

  20. CND Shellac is great! But I had a friend recommend Harmony Gelish. You can get it on amazon for about $12.00. And it comes in a bigger bottle than the CND brand. And Harmony Gelish offers a TON of colors! I use the CND base and top coat with the Harmony Gelish colors. They last just as long and I feel that the color doesn't separate as much as the CND brand. I love love love Harmony and haven't looked back!
