I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...

Just like the next person, I love vacations. Who doesn't want to drop their job for a week and go soak up the sun? That's just my plan next week in Key West, Florida. But with the fun-in-the-sun part also comes (insert scary music) the airport. I hate airports and I hate airplanes. For several reasons.
A - I am the person who is always early to prevent being late. I really dislike being late. And airports almost always run behind. This gives me terrible anxiety, especially with connecting flights. I'm getting the jitters just thinking about it.
B - I do not trust other people with my stuff. Again, especially with connecting flights. Sorry, but I don't want to make it to Florida without all my clothes or makeup or straightner or whatever. Just standing at the baggage claim hoping my bag will come out gives me a case of the worries. Ew. No thanks.
C- I have had several plane rides where all the passengers load up and we get ready to take off and then we have to all get back off because something is wrong with the plane and we have to wait for a new one. Again with the delays. And really, how can that not make you nervous?
D - I get really sick on the landings. I have yet to actually toss my cookies, but I've come pretty darn close. I can't say the same for my sister. (We're twins, how can I get sick and she not, right?). I kid you not it was a scene right out of bridesmaids where the flight attendant says "Ma'am, I'm going to need you to take a seat!". Don't worry, there was no air marshal aboard.

Because of reason "B", I have become quite skilled at packing for a week long vacation in one single carry on bag. So I thought I would show you my tips and tricks as I packed for next week! Here is what went into my bag:
 (1) Five shirts. Yes that is a Cardinals shirt on top. We made it to the World Series!
(2) Five bottoms and one pj bottom.
(3) Three jackets/sweaters to layer with
(4) Three pairs of shoes. I say three, because I ended up not packing the floral slip ins.
(5) Eight dresses. Did I mention that I love dresses?!
How to Pack a Carry On Bag
(1) My liquid bag includes shampoo, conditioner, face lotion, face SPF, primer, mascara, eye liner, foundation, and hair texturizer.
(2) My other two bags with makeup, jewelery, and brushes.

Now begins the actual packing. When picking out your actual items to take, think "will I really wear this?". This is the hardest part for me. I tend to way over estimate what I will need. I usually pre-pack, and then have to take clothes out and pack again.
(3) The secret is to ROLL your clothes. Not fold. Roll. This is a girl scout trick, believe it or not. I learned it in 4th grade. Rolling takes up a lot less room. Then you can start to pack them in the suitcase. Roll all the clothes first and then pack, because you want to put the bulkiest items on bottom and work your way up. Yes, I even rolled my swim suits and unmentionables. I don't put my shoes on the bottom. I feel like this creates wasted space. I fill them in all the gaps as I work my way to the top of the suit case.
(4) A picture of all the clothes inside with room leftover!

Yes, I still take a purse. In my purse I put all of the things I will have to get out on the security conveyor belt. That way I never have to open my carry on. My purse includes: my nook, zip lock bag with the liquids, sunglasses, flat iron, chargers, Dramamine, and wallet with my ID and ticket. And if it fits, my neck pillow. Yes, I am a diva on the air plane

How do you pack for the plane?

  1. What a fantastic post!! I love being organised in my hand luggage, however I don't think I will ever just be able to leave my huge suitcase at home. I like the comfort of knowing I can make choices and not having to make compromises on what to pack. Plus I have far too many beauty products to fit into those tiny plastic bags. I admire you for being a one bag girl!!

    1. It definitely took some practice to master - and there are some days where I miss all of my "get ready" products too. After doing it for a while I have gotten more used to it!

  2. Oh my goodness, if I was ever asked to get off the plane because they had to "check" something, I don't think I would EVER be able to get back on! My nerves would be shot!
And great tips for packing...I clearly need to take your advice because I'm the worst packer in history!

  3. I so wish I could take a vacation, so jealous! My husband has packed and unpacked so many times for the military that we have basically the same system. Everything has its own bag, we roll everything, and we always take the bare necessities. Have a fun trip!

  4. I'm so jealous! Key West is on my bucket list, make sure you take lots of pictures and let me know how it is! I'm a terrible packer, I always take way more than I need.

  7. I only do the carry-on thing, too. ;) For the exact same reason: I'm terrified of them losing my luggage!

And rolling is SUCH a good idea. I'm going to Chicago next week, and I will try that then! :)

And I've always wanted to go to Key West. Post photos!

  8. Have fun in Key West!! Sounds amazing :) I am very impressed with your packing skills! I could use a few of these tips for sure.. I suck at packing. My main problem is over-packing! Good idea to roll your clothes - never would have thought of that saving space!

    1. I used to way overpack too! I have slowly gotten myself out of that, but it certainly was an adjustment. It still takes me forever to pack because I have to decide what to leave behind!

  9. My biggest fear is my luggage will get lost too! I have to wear makeup everyday or I look grossly pale with no eyes, so if my makeup was lost my vacation would be ruined! In fact I left my makeup at home on accident when we left for our honeymoon. Just with the rush of getting everything ready for the wedding and leaving for the honeymoon the next day I forgot it! Luckily we were on a cruise and you can buy makeup on it! I also roll my clothes in my suitcase. You can pack so much more and it helps with preventing wrinkles!

  13. I love airports but I'm also that person that HAS to be early-- I don't care if I'm 4 hours early, I would rather be early and all checked in and all of that then worry about being late! It drives my husband insane, but I can't help it! I do hate traveling alone-- especially in the winter when you have a coat and have electronics in your bag-- going through security is always a nightmare trying to get all your things out and then back in your bag without people behind you piling up! And I think I might be the only female ever who usually under packs for trips! So jealous you're going to Florida, it is getting COLD here and I'm already missing the warm weather of summer!

  17. Confession: I am a terrible packer. I over pack. Like a lot... we might be gone for three days but it looks like I am leaving for three months. Last Christmas my parents asked if I was moving back home I brought so much stuff. Also, I don't go many places on planes sooo that makes it even worse. But apparently you have this whole packing thing down to a science. Perhaps I should take notes...

  19. I roll too! I am able to pack all my clothes in such a smaller space this way! When I travel for scuba diving I have to carry all my clothes and toiletries and then I check my dive bag so I almost always take my clothes on the plane with me too. Haha I love the part about being a diva lol. I also always wear a big scarf so I can use it as a blanket on the plane. I'm suspicious of the blankets they give you haha!

  20. I flew to Texas over the summer and we opted for the carry on route, although the decision was mostly made considering how much money we would save as carry ons were free vs having to have your bag checked (for $40) and all that jazz. I was surprised at how well I did since I am such an over packer (I have too many cute clothes to be able to narrow it all down!), but I definitely could have used your post towards the end of my packing. Best of luck flying!

  22. I am the worse packer in. the. world.

I am that girl with every pair of jeans in my closet, 10 pairs of pajama pants, ever pair of undies I own, 50 shirts, a million hooded sweatshirts and 5 pairs of cowboy boots. Then I'm hauling my 100 pound suitcase across the airport whining like a little girl. Once I'm at my destination, I usually favor a few outfits for their comfort or purpose and end up wearing them over and over again ignoring the 75 other outfits I packed. And this was all for one weekend.

You, however, look like an expert and I may be getting a hold of you when we start packing for our week long cruise I've been freaking out about because I don't know what to wear in the Carribean. Am I allowed to wear my winter coat on the plane? Then what do I do once we are in Florida and it's a million degrees? I'm scared.

    1. Haha I have that problem too! Indiana is so cold now and Florida is hot! I always pack a pair of shorts in my purse and layer my plane outfit. That way I can take off layers upon arriving to the warmer weather and change my pants to shorts in the airport bathroom!
