Sweet Treats and Puppy Dog Teeth

My husband and I have been blessed with a crazy, silly, marley-and-me type 2 year old chocolate lab. We rescued him from the shelter when he was 6 weeks old, and we rescued him again from Parvo (a serious digestive disease). He is now a perfectly normal dog - who gets into everything. But we still love him and pamper him too much.

We always get told how white and shiny his teeth look. Last month however, his breath started smelling terrible! So I decided to give some products a try to relive his problem.

There was no way he was going to let me brush his teeth, and the thought of using a chicken or bacon flavored toothpaste totally grossed me out. Then I saw these. They smell really great, and I was able to hold him down long enough to use them. We will have to see if it works over time. The down sides: the wipes don't like to come out of the container smoothly. I had to take the lid off. Also, they are a little small. I had to use several to get his whole mouth.

Overall, I will continue using them. They seem to do the trick so far, and Ollie doesn't completely hate them.

I also wanted to share this recipe with you. It is delicious! I found it on pinterest, here.

They are called White Chocolate Vanilla Marshmellow Cake Bars. They are SO good. Finished products comes out looking like this:

They are so gooey and sweet - just like I like my desserts. And it was relatively easy too! I highly recommend these for anyone else to try.  I do have a few helpful hints.

The recipe says to line your pan with foil because these cake bars are so sticky.

After having baked them, I really don't think this step was necessary and it made other steps more work. I think if you spray your pan down with PAM first, that it will work just as great.

The "dough", or base layer of this dessert is what you make first. It will come out very thick. (It's supposed to)

The foil made this extremely hard to spread on the pan. Again, I think this step would have been easier without the foil. Maybe you will have better success than I did. I recruited my hubby to help.
Side note - I love my mint green kitchen aid mixer. It makes mixing thick dough like this super easy.

After tasting it, I give this recipe 5 stars, and my husband loves it too. Ollie would have loved to have a bite, but I told him he couldn't because he had already brushed his teeth ;)

What products do you use on your puppies?

  1. I'll have to look into those teeth cleaners... Did you have to really scrub them on Ollie's teeth? I couldn't imagine Misa allowing me to scrub her teeth for a long time. Thanks for the review

    1. No I didn't have to scrub very hard, but Ollie's teeth weren't exceptionally dirty just by looking at it. I'm hoping it will help his breath! It only took a few minutes to get his whole mouth.
      Hope this helps!

  4. I have a black lab who is 13 I love to death and she still acts like a puppy :). I wish I knew this when she was younger {but I was 14 when I got her} but anyhow you're actually supposed to get their teeth cleaned at the vet once or twice a year for health purposes. I didn't know that till a few years ago, but her teeth are really white now!

    1. Aren't labs the best? Yes we ask our vet about teeth cleaning, he says it isn't necessary yet. It's his breath that is terrible!

  9. I've never heard of the wipes before! My dogs would never stand me brushing their teeth with a brush so this might be the perfect solution for me!
